ATHENS, Georgia – When Kyle Thomas Glasser decided to travel to Central America with International Service Learning, he had no idea how much it would change his life. But a life-changing experience was exactly what it was.

Almost everyone has that one teacher that they hold dear well into adulthood. Kyle Thomas Glasser knows how true this is. As a young student, Kyle Thomas Glasser had an eager mind; he loved to learn. He thanks his 7^th grade science teacher, Lou Ann Caldwell, for that. She stands out in Kyle Thomas Glasser’s mind as someone who cared, someone who made him want to learn.

Lou Ann Caldwell died of cancer at the end of Kyle Thomas Glasser’s time with her. Her class was different; Kyle Thomas Glasser recalls fondly that he had his first taste of “surgery” dissecting cow and sheep parts in her classroom. While most students cringed at this, Kyle Thomas Glasser embraced it, and in a way, it planted the seeds of ambition to be a doctor someday.

Ms. Caldwell’s impact on Kyle Thomas Glasser is still going strong – he received the Lou Ann Caldwell Memorial Scholarship – a fund set up in her honor and given only to the brightest students interested in science. Having someone that close to him pass away due to a fatal illness, as well as his mother’s diagnosis of thyroid cancer, reaffirmed his childhood dream of being a doctor.

Another person Kyle Thomas Glasser credits with setting the stage for his future is his uncle, Kevin Gillespie. Kevin passed away when Kyle Thomas Glasser was a young boy, but there is not a day that goes by that he doesn’t continue to influence how his nephew conducts himself – with dignity and class.

Kevin Gillespie’s story is one of a life cut all too short. This 34-year-old NYPD Street Crime Officer was gunned down in the line of duty. Kyle Thomas Glasser calls his uncle a hero, and that is true in many ways. Kevin started out in foster care and fought dyslexia to graduate highschool, enter the Marines and then live his dream as a NYPD Blue.  Kyle Thomas Glasser watched his uncle overcome obstacles and do what he loved in the face of adversity. Even though his uncle is gone, he is with his nephew every day. Kyle Thomas Glasser recently attended his own brother’s graduation from the NYPD Academy – his brother proudly wearing the same badge–and badge number–that his brave uncle wore.

Kyle Thomas Glasser is a young man who won’t quit and never gives up. He whole-heartedly thanks both Mrs. Caldwell and his uncle Kevin for planting the seeds that helped to make a shy boy mature into Kyle Thomas Glasser the man. If the two are looking down from heaven now, Kyle Thomas Glasser is making them proud.

Twenty-one year old Kyle Thomas Glasser’s mission in life is simple: to serve others.  A student of medicine, a devout Catholic and an active member of the leadership organization Sigma Alpha Lambda, Kyle Thomas Glasser spends much of his time devoted to making a positive impact on his world.  When he isn’t busy with studies as a senior at UGA, Kyle Thomas Glasser can be found mentoring incoming students and shadowing Dr. Jeff Traub in Atlanta.
